West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue is launching a hard-hitting road safety campaign in a bid to cut the number of deaths and injuries on the county’s roads. For every two people West Yorkshire’s firefighters rescued from a dwelling fire last year, they rescued 15 from a road traffic collision.
Today media had the chance to witness in graphic detail a staged horror smash – similar to those which our firefighters are faced with on a regular basis.
A fire crew and the county’s Urban Search and Rescue team will cut live casualties from the wreckages. It will provide an insight into the high level of skills and pressure a firefighter is under when releasing trapped casualties. Senior Community Safety Officer Brian Robson, Road Safety Liaison Officer Kate Fielden and Watch Manager Mick Brennan, from the brigade’s International Training Centre Road Traffic Collision department were available for comment.
